Hebrews 11:1 Faith is... A Cure For The Hiccups

Updated on January 5, 2014

It seems that the topic of faith has come up a lot this week. So I thought that I would take the subject in hand and create a writing on the subject. This is not an exhaustive study, but simply, a few of my thoughts and memories. I present them to you in the hopes that I might in some way encourage you in your relationship with God. Everything we know about God must be accepted by faith. So it is my aim to help you understand this critical ingredient of the Christian life.

Faith is something that can't be seen, touched, or smelled by our physical senses. It can't be measure by any mechanical scale, proven by any scientific formula, given or gained by any means of trade. Yet, in times of trial and hardship it is the first thing that we reach for. When facing death, sickness, and uncertainty, it is our most valued possession. Although it lacks physical form, it is as real as the breath you breath and just as vital.

Faith is the word that we use to describe hope, trust, and all the things we are sure of, but are unable to prove. Faith is certainty in a bottle, a cure for fear and doubt. Faith is an understanding and it is an action. By faith we understand what we believe and act on it by living by it. Faith is knowing because we know.

The following story is a memory that I, and my eldest sister have in common. I was around 5 years old making her 17. She tells this story better then I do, so I asked her to write it out for me. The following is her perspective of the day God answered my prayer by healing my beloved dog of a case of Hiccups.

Midget's Hiccups

Our faithful pooch Midget, a Poodle mix, was Aaron’s best friend. She was a little larger then a Toy Poodle, had a blondish tan shaggy coat, and was about a year old. You never saw one with out the other

On this morning, like so many others, they were in front of the heater, enjoying the warm air on a cold winter morning. However, instead of laying contentedly next to Midget stroking her fur as usual, Aaron was sitting up staring down at Midget with great concern.

I was getting my things ready to walk out the door to go to school, seeing his distress, I asked "what's wrong?".

“Look at Midget," He answered, "Something is wrong with her!” You could hear the worry in his voice.

Well? There she was, sound asleep and laying on her side, sprawled out comfortably. Positioned perfectly for maximum heat absorption. Everything looked normal to me. Then I saw what was worrying him. Midget had the hiccups. Not the normal kind, she had the kind that totally sucked her whole side in and violently shook her little body.

Seeing that Midget was not letting these hiccups interrupt her sleep or heat absorption, I continued to put my coat on and headed out the door. I took a moment to assure my little brother that Midget had the hiccups and that they would stop in a few minutes. Sadly, I could tell that he wasn't convinced but unfortunately, I was late and had to get going.

Before I could completely shut the door behind me, I heard this very confident voice say “There, that did it!” Alarmed, I stepped back inside to look. Aaron was still looking at Midget, and Midget was still sleeping soundly in front of the heater. Confused I asked “What did you do?” My tone exposed my bewilderment. He looked up at me with a pleased look on his face and said “I prayed for her.”

“Oh ye of little faith”, I thought to my self. I stood there looking at an undisturbed sleeping dog, my brother grinning from ear to ear, and a dog that no longer had the hiccups.

Midget was unaware of the miracle that took place on her behalf. Aaron, on the other hand, was well aware. His understanding showed in the grin that took up his whole face. He knew that Jesus had heard his prayer.

So what did that do for me? As I closed the door the second time, I thanked Jesus for being so wonderful to my little brother. I too had a grin that took up my whole face and it stayed there all the way to school.

But Jesus said, Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14

Faith is.....

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

I have lots of stories like this. some more amazing some less. I would bet you do to. Moments where God proved himself to us. Depositing assurance into our lives one miracle at a time. Confirming our confidence in him.

Like all children, I grew up. My faith would eventually be questioned. I, like everyone else, had to make a decision about what I believe. It was little moments like this one that convinced me. That enabled me to hang on to my Christian roots and press on.

The truth is, I can't take credit for my faith. My Christian walk from beginning to end is a book authored by my Lord Jesus Christ. Every chapter has been pinned for his Glory and my spiritual growth. The only reason I believe is, he has shown himself to me, time and time again. For me, he is real. My relationship with him is personal, tangible, and intimate. Yes, it is by faith that I believe. Yet, somehow it doesn't seem like it. Emotionally, I feel as though he is physical.

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.....(Hebrews 12:2a)

I started out by asking you what faith is? I would like to conclude by saying that my faith is Jesus Christ. He is my hope, my assurance, my first and last resort. I have no plan B. I turn to Him when I am up against the impossible. When those I love are suffering, when I need understanding, and when I need strength. In each and every trial, He is my best hope.

It is my goal to point others to the Lord Jesus Christ. To help them know him as I know him. So that they too will have hope at all times, even when their dog has the hiccups
