Gay Marriage: My Christian Perspective

Updated on March 28, 2013

My Thoughts on Gay Marriage

And he (Jesus) answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Matthew 19:4-6

Hi all. I was driving home from Jacksonville, Fl one Saturday afternoon alone and bored so I turned on the radio and started scanning for a station to listen to. I started with the FM stations. I pushed the scan button on my radio to receive a sampling of each station. As it ran across 89.9 (NPR) I heard a female voice say the Bible was inconsistent with itself and with our society on several issues. This remark grabbed my attention, so I left it on that station and listened further. In her attempt to discredit the Bible, she went on to use for her example slavery, stating that the Bible says it is OK to have slaves. Mockingly she added, "We all know that slavery is wrong." I was about to move on since the speaker clearly had not taken the time to find out what the Bible really thinks of slavery, when she started in on her attack on the traditional Christian family model. Declaring that just as our society has changed its understanding of slavery it is now time to change our understanding on marriage. It turns out this program was a sounding board for the left, designed to express its outrage on the Florida and California ban on gay marriage. The last remark I heard before moving on was that they still had a lot of work to do in our society.

The last remark bothered me more than all the attacks that I heard previously. Why? Because it reminds me that there is a organized effort in America determined to discredit God's Word, the church, and the traditional Christian family. This atheistic movement is wealthy, aggressive, and so far very effective in their efforts. I am hearing their outrage everywhere in the media, from talk show hosts to Beauty Pageants. They are taking their agenda seriously. While they actually represent a very small portion of our society, one would think they were the majority. This is because their message is everywhere and in your face all the time. Their overall aim seems to be to remove God from our society. Because Christianity is the dominate religion in America , they have to discredit the Bible and redefine marriage. They do this by promoting humanistic world views, which rejects the sovereignty of God. They recognize that if they wish to redefine society as a whole, they must first redefining marriage For the foundation of our society is the family.

The same sex union is only one of many movements across America that attempts to remove God from our society. What God has joined together, man wants to pull asunder.

If things continue as they are today, I expect that some time in the near future same sex marriage will be legal in all 50 states. While I'm not a defeatist, I am very practical. I don't believe we can legislate Christian doctrine. I recognize that the traditional Christian family model points to Christ, and like the church, it is a representation of the Kingdom of God. To expect a non believer to understand or accept a Christian's view of marriage is unreasonable.

The word marriage to a Christian has religious overtones. We believe calling their union marriage insinuates God's approval and acceptance. I, as a Christian, see it like this, the gay and lesbians are demanding that God accept their view of marriage in the same way Cain expected God to accept his offering of fruits and vegetables. When God refused to accept Cain's offering, he became furious. From Cain's perspective the rejection seemed completely unreasonable. Because Abel's offering was accepted in the eyes of God, Cain grew jealous, then attacked and killed Abel. God is not an ice cream parlor. You don't get to choose your flavor. Because he has only ordained one model for the family, the gay and lesbians only have two choices, either accept this model or reject it. In their rejection, they are attacking the Christian Church. They are shaking their fists at us because God will not accept their union. Their problem is not with the church, it is with God. But it will be the Church that is persecuted.

John 15:18-19
If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

The reality is that they can call it marriage and they can have all the legal rights that this government can give. Let the world do as the world does, for we are not of this world. But they are going a bit further than this. They are insisting we the Church also accept their union. I have watch as denomination after denomination has had to affirm their stance against gay priest, pastors, and gay marriage. Most stand by their biblical position but there are some that are caving to the pressure. It would appear that the gays and lesbians want God's approval. Their union has been rejected. They will never be one flesh in the eyes of God.

In Gen 4:6-7 God says,

Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

God's response was wonderful. He was not rejecting Cain he was rejecting his offering. God's response to the gays and lesbians is the same. Come on, do what is right and you too will be accepted. However we know that Cain wanted it his way, not God's way and so it is with the homosexuals. God is not homophobic. He does not hate the sinner. But he does hate the sin.

These are hard times to be a strong Christian. I am sorry to say, it is going to get a lot harder. I wish you to take heart, be strengthened in this knowledge. God is sovereign! He is able to overcome his enemies. The Gay Rights movement may have a lot of money, the power of the liberal media and Man's stamp of approval on their side. But in the end it will be God's opinions and views that matter! It will be His understanding of right and wrong that counts. God created the family. He knows how to defend it.

In the meantime, if you find yourself as the odd man out on this subject. If those on the other side are making you feel foolish for your faith in Christ and His ordained picture of the family. Remember Luke 21:17. Jesus said that we will be hated by all men for his name's sake.

In Luke 21:12 he said:

But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

While we are not being thrown in prison, We are being persecuted and our stand is definitely being brought before kings and rulers. Making the next verse all the more relevant:

Luke 21:13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

I believe that there has never been a better time to share our faith in Christ. Declare to the world the truths we live by. The traditional Christian family model is bullet proof when it comes to doctrines and truth. In it are all the tenets of our faith that point to Christ. Use it to share your faith. Tell people why you believe in the traditional Christian family model. You may be surprised! In so doing you may discover a new believer just waiting to be born.

Revelations 12:11
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

2 Timothy 1:8-9
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

The Bible is relevant, It is consistent, and is exactly what this generation needs. Society is indeed out of step with it. God's Word is sovereign over the world and its governments. So my Brothers and sisters in Christ, chin up and keep pressing on.

In Christ
