Only In A Small Town
For reasons, I have spent the the summer in a small Nevada town called Winnemucca. It is a mining town of about 10,000 people. It is one my favorite places on the planet. Located in the north central part of the state. Its people and sense of community are a real treat.
I went to the local hardware on Friday looking for an upholsterer’s staple puller. I perused the tool isle for a few moments and did not find what I was looking for. "Not surprising", I said to myself, "after all, this is a small town." I then went to the counter and asked if I could order the tool. As I was describing the staple puller to the sales person, a man walked by and heard my description. “I have one of those” he interrupted smiling. “You can borrow it if you would like” He was as generous as he was sincere, “No thank you” I replied,” I’m sure I will be able to order it, I’m in no hurry.” My would be hero was undaunted, “Ok, but if you change your mind I live in the white house with the red roof.” He pointed toward the north end of town. I thanked him again as he turned a walked out the door. As it turned out I was unable to order this wonderful tool and I spent the next hour visiting every shop in town in the hope of procuring my badly needed tool. In the end I was left searching the north end of town for a white house with a red roof. I think the town must have grown some since the kind gentleman had last given directions. For I found several houses that fit his description. I did not have the courage to knock on any doors.
Only in a small town does a man walk up to you and offer to let you borrow a tool even though he has no clue who you are. Only in a small town does a man expect you to be able to find him by describing the color of his roof and house. Although I naïvely declined the man’s offer, I am grateful to him for his willingness to help. He has shown me the importance of taking risks, the power of a Good Samaritan, and the importance of giving an address as well as the color of the roof and house.
