The Giant's Path
Sleeping Giant - Inish Tuaisceart - Blasket Island
The following is my first installment of a story I have been kicking around in my head for years. It started out as a bed time story for my kids, but ended up speaking to something deep in me. The Giants path is a road we all take in one way or other. For me, and the other Giants of Morgan, it is our road to life. I bid you welcome as you walk with us on this path. There will be times that we laugh and times that we cry. But more than any other, there will be times of change. Change for the better. So if you are ready and the idea of walking into the unknown does not frighten you. Come along, grab your bags, and lets go.
Sincerely Yours
ABR
What Is It?
"What is it?" asked Elizabeth. Once her eyes had adjusted. Her tone revealed her bewilderment.
"I'm not sure." Replied Dad. "It is too dark."
"Whatever it is, it sure is big! Joshua reported.
Elizabeth, Joshua and their dad Kent, stood in marvel at the large mysterious form about 12 feet away. The entrance to the cave was only a few steps behind them. The light from outside was bright, yet it was unable to penetrate deep enough to reveal the secrets that hide in the darkness.
Kent's torch partially illuminating the figure. Its flames danced in the darkness casting shadows on the walls. Making everyone feel a little creepy.
The object was positioned horizontally on the ground. It had to be between 15 and 20 ft long and about 5-6 ft high. It barely fit in the cave. The light was not bright enough to expose a lot of details. The smell was horrid. Like dirty body smell but much worse. They all held their hands over their noses. Kent stepped closer, using his torch to illuminate different parts of the mysterious thing.
"Those look like legs." commented Elizabeth. Kent thought so too, but kept his thoughts to himself. He was trying to work it out. The more he looked the more he realized that he was looking at a large, masculine, human-like, figure. He was laying on his side with his back toward them. "It must be a statue, a very large statue," he mused, assuring his children. It was covered in dust, rocks, and dirt. At some point, the cave above it had collapsed, leaving the majority of its body buried under a pile of rocks and dirt. It looked like it had been there for years. He wanted to touch it to see what it was made of but was unable to reach the exposed areas. You could make out that back of his head, legs, and lower back.
There was something soft on the floor. He bent over to pick it up. "Hair? Statues don't have hair?"
"I think it's alive." Joshua whispered, "I can hear it breathing." Joshua spoke what Kent's senses were telling him, but his mind wouldn't let him believe.
"What? Are you sure? He stood motionless barely breathing himself making it as quiet as possible. He didn't hear anything.
"Wait, listen, you'll hear it." Joshua promised. They stood motionless for along time, then sure enough. "There! Do you hear that?" Whispered Joshua. Indeed, there it was. The unmistakable sound of breathing.
Kent's head was spinning. Something about this seemed familiar. But he couldn't say why. He had never been here before. Never seen anything like this. Yet......? Then it dawned on him, "Great Granddad!..... No way!" He said with disbelief, "It can't be!"
Kent immediately turned toward his kids and motioned them outside without saying a word.
